Every scientific claim, such as engineering, should be supported by a mathematical model to verify its applicability. Such is the case with structural calculations, which sometimes are provided yet taken for granted in building projects to push through with the construction. But if this is properly done, various realizations in the cost and integrity will come to light, providing more confidence that the undertakings will go smoothly.

More than a Building Permit Requirement

Aside from satisfying building permit requirements, structural design calculations can also let you see how the various components were designed and why their sizes were concluded to be as such. One might not easily appreciate it, but considering that it affects around 40% of the total project cost, one should be left with no choice but to question whatsoever is indicated there.

Another consideration where it can be of best use is when claims are requested. In this case, it puts engineering science on your side, reflecting the magnitude of damages caused by negligence in design considerations or construction-related matters, whichever is applicable.

When compiled in one document, the structural engineering calculations should easily be broken down into the following:

Structural element sizing, analysis, and design (i.e. footing, walls, beams, columns, trusses, slabs)

Concrete reinforcement or steel/timber connection calculation and details, whatever is applicable

Analysis of loadings contributed by various elements during its operational lifespan

Improvements in the structural elements that considers earthquake, roof wind load, hurricane, snowstorm, and any other catastrophic natural disaster; and

The global effects of all combined loadings in the structure. Preferably, this can be shown as part of the design software results or in hand calculations.

Must-Have in Calculations

Only few engineering design companies manage to provide a comprehensive and accurate calculation. To ensure that you won’t be tricked in the formation of any structural calculation, try to require at least the following:

Signature of a duly-recognized structural engineer. Attesting their signature is the best way a structural engineer can declare liabilities should the building experience design-related failures later on. This way, the complication of understanding structural calculations is removed.

Require formulas together with their references. Some calculations done through spreadsheet software may look too complicated to handle or even understand. To settle it, require the formulas to be included in the formation of the calculation and a recognized reference where it can be seen.
